Tips for Finding the Perfect Toothbrush for You

Tips for Finding the Perfect Toothbrush for YouBrushing your teeth regularly is just as important to finding the right toothbrush. The following information offers some details to ensure you choose just the right toothbrush.

Why a Soft Toothbrush is Better

While you may believe using a firm toothbrush will scrub your teeth better, you are doing them more harm than good when using this type of brush. A soft toothbrush will adequately get rid of residue and debris without harming the hard covering of the enamel. By using a soft toothbrush, you can angle the bristles more easily along the gum line as well. That is why a soft toothbrush, approved by the American Dental Association (ADA,) is the best type of brush to choose. The Mayo Clinic adds that brushing the teeth for 2 minutes with a soft-bristled brush will clean the teeth sufficiently, provided you cover the outside and inside of the teeth, the chewing surfaces, and the tongue. A small to medium head is the best brush to use. Make sure the grip is comfortable, and that the brush fits properly inside your mouth.

Making Your Toothbrush Last Longer

Once you choose a toothbrush with soft bristles, and one that is endorsed by the ADA, you need to make sure you adequately maintain it. Store your toothbrush away from the toothbrushes of other household members to avoid cross-contamination. If the bristles become splayed or you use the toothbrush too long, you need to replace it immediately. With proper care, a soft toothbrush should last about 3 months. Even if it looks like it is in good condition, you should replace your toothbrush every 3 months to ensure that you are using a reliable dental tool. Never use toothpicks to remove debris from your teeth. Always use a soft bristle brush and floss to safely clean the gums and teeth.
