While most patients understand the importance of brushing their teeth and flossing, many do not brush their tongue like they should be doing in their everyday routine. You may be wondering if you should even brush your tongue. The answer is yes, you most certainly should be everytime you brush your teeth.
You should brush your tongue anytime that you brush your teeth. You should brush the entire surface of your tongue as best as you can. However, do not brush too hard or break the skin as this can be extremely uncomfortable and can put you at risk of an infection.
Many companies also sell a device called a tongue scraper that is designed to clean your tongue. The ADA has reviewed these devices and stated that they are no more effective at cleaning your tongue than proper brushing, so they are not necessary.
Why Do I Need to Brush My Tongue?
There are several reasons to brush your tongue regularly. Just as your teeth and gums accumulate bacteria throughout the day, so does your tongue This bacteria sticks to the surface of your tongue and forms a biofilm This biofilm is difficult to get rid of and cannot be removed simply by rinsing your mouth with water.
The biofilm also cannot be removed through the use of mouthwash, which is why brushing your tongue directly is a must. The biofilm can cause bad breath and can even spread bacteria back onto your teeth, even if you have just brushed them. Removing this biofilm helps improve your overall oral health and gives you fresher breath for longer.
Do not neglect your tongue when practicing your daily oral care. Brush it thoroughly and then rinse with clean water once you are done. Contact our office if you would like more information on proper oral hygiene practices or are ready to come see our team.
