What Is Causing Your Teeth to Move While You Sleep?

Posted on 4/26/2021 by Jonathan J. Golab, DDS, PA
What Is Causing Your Teeth to Move While You Sleep?Teeth may move ever so slightly while you sleep. However, they should not be shifting to any noticeable degree. If this is happening, you need to make a dental appointment right away.

Why Your Teeth May Be Moving in Your Sleep

Sometimes teeth shift while you sleep because of a condition known as night bruxism. This condition represents a disorder where the patient grinds and clenches their teeth at night. They brux while they are sleeping, so they may not be aware they have the disorder. Bruxism can lead to all types of dental complaints, including tooth mobility, tooth looseness, cracked fillings or teeth, chips, and jaw pain. To overcome bruxism, patients may undergo cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to deal with stress better. It also helps to cut down on caffeine and to wear a mouthguard at night.

How a Mouthguard May Help

We can make a mouthguard or night guard for you that will prevent you from grinding and gritting your teeth. It will also prevent you from placing added pressure on your bite. A night guard is made to thrust the jaw forward so it won't clamp down while you are asleep. A customized night guard is better, as it will fit over your teeth precisely. We can also monitor the progress of the night guard's use if we design it and provide it. If bruxism is not the reason for tooth shifting, it may be due to aging, gum disease, or even your sleep position.
