Common Questions Teens Have About Aligning Trays

Common Questions Teens Have About Aligning TraysTeens who wish to straighten their teeth may want to opt for aligning trays instead of braces. After all, the trays are virtually invisible and reduces concerns or self-consciousness socially during the teeth straightening process. Following are common questions asked about this type of innovative orthodontic therapy.

What Does Orthodontic Treatments with Aligning Trays Involve?

Straightening the teeth with aligning trays involves wearing a series of removable aligners made with a clear plastic to realign the bite or straighten the teeth. Wearing the trays is convenient, as they are hardly noticeable and do not come with the restrictions associated with wearing braces. You can remove the trays when you eat or when cleaning the teeth, thereby making tooth care easier. Trays are switched out every few weeks as straightening progresses. To begin the therapy, usually, a 3D image of the mouth is taken so the aligning trays will fit correctly. Depending on the patient, the therapy takes one year to 1.5 years overall. The trays are switched out about every two weeks during the therapy.

How Soon Can I Start Seeing Results?

While straightening the teeth with aligning trays takes 12 to 16 months, you will start seeing results in only a couple of weeks. You can be assured that the trays will work, as they are approved by the FDA.

Will the Straightening Process Hurt Using Aligning Trays?

When you first switch out the aligners, you will feel a little discomfort. However, that means the trays are doing their job. After a while, you will become acclimated to them as they continue to move your teeth. You need to wear the aligners for about 22 hours per day, only taking them out to brush and floss or eat. Again, you will feel some discomfort, but you will get used to it over time.
