Stages of Gum Disease You Should Know

Posted on 5/23/2022 by Jonathan J. Golab, DDS, PA
Stages of Gum Disease You Should KnowGum disease is a severe condition that can lead to tooth loss and other health problems. It is essential to be aware of the different stages of gum disease so you can take steps to prevent it from progressing. Here are the three stages of gum disease that you should know about.

Stage One Gingivitis

The first stage is gingivitis, a mild form of gum disease often caused by plaque buildup on the teeth. During this first stage of gum disease, your gums may become red, inflamed, or swollen, and there may be some bleeding when you brush or floss. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to a more severe stage known as periodontitis. This stage involves the destruction of structures around your teeth, such as ligaments and bones. Other symptoms include receding gums and loose teeth.

Stage Two Periodontitis

The next stage of gum disease is periodontitis. It is a more serious form that can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. Periodontitis occurs when the gums and bones around your teeth are damaged by plaque. The symptoms include receding gums, loose teeth, and bone loss. Furthermore, your immune system may be affected, and you may experience more severe health problems.

Stage Three Advanced Periodontitis

The final stage of gum disease is advanced periodontitis. This stage is characterized by severe damage to your teeth, gums, bones, and ligaments. The symptoms include receding gums, loose teeth, and complete tooth loss. Advanced periodontitis can also lead to other health problems like heart disease and stroke. If you have this stage of gum disease, it is crucial to see a dentist so they can determine the best way to treat it.
