Gum disease is a prevalent problem for adults and children. The primary cause of this condition is the build-up of bacteria in your mouth. If not treated in time, it will result in the loss of teeth and destruction of the gum tissues. Some of the common symptoms you can experience when you have gum disease include the following:
Swollen and Tender Gums
Accumulating bacteria and plaque on your teeth will irritate your gums and lead to inflammation. If you are not treated early enough, it will cause your gums to be swollen and be quite susceptible to bleeding.
Loose Teeth
In severe cases, the gums will tend to pull away from their teeth, losing some connecting bones. The outcome is teeth becoming loose or even falling out. The primary cause of loose teeth in most adults is prolonged smoking. Loose teeth will make chewing of food quite problematic.
Bad Breath
Bad breath, also referred to as halitosis, is a symptom of gum disease. The accumulation of plaque on the gum line will cause bad breath. If the plaque is not eliminated in time it will cause bleeding and tender and swollen gums.
Sensitive Teeth
Gums diseases cause inflammation and soreness of the gum tissue. Losing the teeth' ligaments will expose your root surface to external factors that cause sensitivity.
Bad Taste
When food and bacteria are trapped in your tongue and teeth, they produce various sulfur compounds. If you note any changes to your taste, it can indicate impending gum disease.
To prevent gum disease, brushing your teeth twice a day is recommended. It would be best if you also floss your teeth regularly. Flossing helps eliminate all food particles that are stuck in between your teeth. Visiting a dentist regularly also helps to identify any gum disease early enough and manage it in the proper manner.
