Cleanings, Exams, and Oral Cancer Screenings

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends a proper examination and thorough cleaning at the very minimum, twice year once you have a healthy restored mouth. However, if you have been diagnosed in the past with periodontal disease, the ADA in their position paper state that you should be seen four times a year, to “prevent” the periodontal disease from returning. This is because the bacteria in the form of tartar, builds to a critical level that then starts to destroy your jaw bone. Oral cancer examinations are done at each visit routinely.

Periodontal Care/Maintenance

Your periodontal (gum and bone) tissues are more important than your teeth. The gums just cover your bone, so theoretically, it is the jawbone that is most important, as the jawbone is the foundation that holds your teeth in. Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States and affects 70-75% of the population. Periodontal disease is the result of an infection in the gum tissues, that quickly progresses into your jawbone, eventually destroying the underlying bone. Next stop, tooth loss.

The disease is characterized by gums that are swollen, red, and tend to bleed during brushing and flossing. Luckily, periodontal disease is easy to prevent and treat if it is caught early enough. If we notice signs of advanced periodontal disease, we may recommend a scaling and root planing procedure. The goal is to return your gums and bone to a healthy state.

Dentistry for Kids

Professional dental care is a crucial part of your child's oral health. Be sure to schedule your child's first appointment by the time of their first birthday. This allows us to monitor the development of their oral health. Developmental problems are easier to treat in the beginning stages.

As your child grows older, we can establish a strong foundation for their oral health, one that will ensure a lifetime of healthy, beautiful teeth.

Mouthguards/Night Guards/Bruxism

If you participate in physical activities that put you at risk for dental trauma or injury, we strongly recommend a mouthguard. A mouthguard will protect your teeth and prevent dental emergencies. If you suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding), we may also recommend a night guard. Many patients with bruxism tend to grind their teeth during sleep. A night guard acts as a barrier that prevents enamel wear.

TMD (Tempromandibular disorder)

TMD affects your temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Many people suffer from migraines, headaches, sore muscles, and dizziness because of dysfunction in this joint. Most often this is due to clenching, yes, but more often than not it is due to misaligned teeth, so correction of that is the first line of defense. Then, an anti-bruxing appliance (also known as a “night guard) will always be helpful in alleviating and staving off these symptoms..

Sleep Apnea/Oral Appliances

If you have obstructive sleep apnea, you may benefit from an oral appliance. An oral appliance will keep your jaw in the proper position during sleep. This opens your airway and improves your breathing during sleep. With an oral appliance, you may find yourself feeling more well-rested, alert and happy, thanks to a full night's sleep. And there are possibilities that when someone needs a night-guard for clenching, it can be converted into a sleep appliance.
