Holistic dentistry has become increasingly popular in the last decade or so. There are dentists and patients alike who prefer holistic dentistry to conventional protocols because these people value practices that utilize natural and biocompatible restoration materials along with an emphasis on preventing disease through early detection and salvaging as much biological tissue as possible when placing restorations.

Our dentist, Dr. Golab, offers holistic dental services to patients in and around our community.

When a dentist is providing holistic care, he or she will take an interest in the overall wellness of their patients. This is because many health conditions affect the oral cavity. Understanding a person’s overall health history can help dental professionals anticipate potential issues and tailor routine checkups and cleanings accordingly.

Beyond emphasizing the importance of full-body health and nutrition, holistic practitioners strive to use the least invasive treatment option possible with restorative materials that do not contain potential toxins.

Holistic dentistry offers health-conscious patients the best of both worlds. Our patients enjoy state-of-the-art technology and a team of dental professionals who take an interest in a person’s total wellbeing.

One major objective of holistic dentistry is to provide the safest and least toxic treatment possible by avoiding the use of materials that might contain mercury, and instead choosing biologic restorations that do not provoke an immune response. Another important facet of holistic dentistry is to preserve as much precious tissue as possible. In addition to treating dental injuries and decay with biocompatible restorations, holistic practitioners consider treatment alternatives to conventional ones for improving gum and bone health.

Our practice offers mercury-free restorations as an alternative to amalgam fillings. Amalgam is a metal compound that has been used for decades to treat tooth decay. While amalgam made for durable restorations, this compound can contain small amounts of mercury. When mercury is exposed to heat, toxic vapors can be released. Due to concerns about mercury vapors, our practice uses materials like composite resin or porcelain to repair broken and diseased teeth.

Our practice also offers safe amalgam removal. If you have old restorations that you would like removed for aesthetic or health reasons, our practice can facilitate this process safely and comfortably. We adhere to the safe amalgam removal protocol established by the IAOMT (International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology), and the IAMFD (International Academy of Mercury Safe Dentists).

Common Holistic Dentistry Questions

What is holistic dentistry?

Holistic dentistry involves treating conditions and issues that affect the oral cavity with natural ingredients and materials, wherever possible. While a holistic dentist will employ modern technology and conventional medicine, he or she may try to take as natural an approach as possible to treating patients.

For example, one way that a holistic dentist might stand out from a more conventional dental practice would be an insistence on the use of mercury-free restorations. Mercury, in trace amounts, can be found in old, amalgam (metal) dental work. Since mercury is a toxin, holistic dentists prefer to work with other materials that do not contain trace amounts of potential harmful metal. Instead, a patient needing a filling will receive one made from composite resin (a glass and plastic compound) over one made with amalgam.

What is biological dentistry?

Biological dentistry is a philosophical approach to treating oral health conditions. The objective in biological dentistry centers on the need for professional treatment that utilizes materials compatible with the body and keeping as much biological tissue intact as possible. Biological dentistry is mercury-free as well so that patients with concerns about trace mercury vapors can rest easy knowing that our practice only places mercury-free restorations.

What are the benefits of holistic dentistry?

There are quite a few unique benefits to holistic dentistry. Those who are health-conscientious appreciate a holistic dentist’s perspective on fluoride use, tooth decay and root canal treatment, and mercury-free dental work. If a person is worried about trace mercury vapors in amalgam dental work, he or she will rest easy knowing that our practice is equipped to preserve and increase oral health without exposing our guests to potentially harmful substances and practices.

Moreover, visiting a holistic dentist is beneficial to a person’s total wellness because holistic practitioners strongly believe in the concept of oral systemic health – meaning that the health of the mouth and body are connected. Holistic practitioners focus on the wellness of the total body. For instance, a person with diabetes has an increased risk for periodontal disease. In this case, our team will monitor gum healthy very closely during office visits for cleanings and checkups.

Is holistic dentistry more expensive?

Holistic dentistry places a high priority on prevention because preventing oral disease can save a person quite a lot of time and money. As dental problems advance, they become more serious. This is because a tooth cannot regenerate new tissue to heal after sustaining permanent damage. Without professional treatment, conditions like tooth decay and periodontal disease can progress into very destructive diseases.
